Giving Back to Conservation

The Brevard Nature Alliance is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2019 Space Coast Birding andWildlife Festival initiative“Giving Back to Conservation” is the Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary. Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary(FWH) opened its doors as a grassroots non-profit facility in 1973. The mission has always remained the same: to aid injured, sick and orphaned Florida native wildlife and migratory birds and return them to their place in the ecosystem. Patient numbers have increased steadily with about 5000 patients now annually getting care. There is no charge to drop off an animal in need — some remain for 6 months or more. The average cost per patient per day is about $5.00.

FWH is a unique and important resource for Brevard County. In addition to providing quality animal care, FWH answers questions regarding wildlife in need, ranging from what to do with a baby animal that may have been found, to why that woodpecker is pounding on the gutters. With the great number of patients and a limited budget, FWH could not function without dedicated volunteers, who range from high school students to retirees. Staff and volunteers keep our hospital running, provide educational programs and work with our live ambassador animals, fulfilling another important role of FWH: wildlife education. These programs are a hit for school groups, summer camps and retirement facilities. Last year, our volunteers contributed over 16,000 hours helping to keep wildlife wild. There are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available at FWH.

FWH is licensed by the state and federal government but receives no funding from them. We have built great relationships with many organizations including Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Vero Beach Humane Society, as well as other Florida wildlife rehabilitators. These relationships are important for creating the best outcome for wildlife in our area. Our goal is to use the funds raised in the silent auction for medical equipment upgrades, medications, and diagnostic testing currently not available to us.

Silent Auction

Proceeds from the Silent Auction are used to fund our “Giving Back to Conservation” initiative. Every year we take 100% of the Silent Auction net proceeds and donate them to a worthy, environmentally – related cause in Brevard County, home of the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. Last year we raised over $5,000 , which was donated to The Enchanted Forest, Titusville, FL. The recipient of this year’s proceeds, as voted on by the Brevard Nature Alliance Board of Directors, is the Florida Wildlife Hospital, Melbourne, FL.

Please Browse and Bid on a Limited edition print from Birdwatchers Digest, Kowa and Zeiss Binoculars, a Wildside Big Year Tour, birding books, field guides, camera accessories, just to name a few. Look for the “Buy it Now” tags on certificates for local restaurants and taverns.
